DN Tank’s Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems has been used for over 30 years as insulated reservoirs to store energy as chilled water for district cooling systems.

Warm and chilled water enters and exits the tank through special internal diffusers made of slotted pipe located at the top and bottom of the tank, respectively. The resulting thermocline stratifies warm water at the top of the tank and chilled water at the bottom of the tank.

Chillers create cold water during periods of off-peak electrical demand, when rates are lower, and the chilled water is stored in the DN Thermal Energy Storage tank. The chilled water is then withdrawn and distributed to the facility during peak demand periods — or during planned or unplanned electrical or chiller outages.

TES tanks minimize the chiller’s parasitic electric load in gas turbine inlet cooling systems. As a result, power production and output is maximized when it is most in demand: on hot days.

The Advantages of DN

To maintain their structural integrity, most steel tanks need periodic repainting, during which the tanks are offline. By comparison, DN’s prestressed concrete tanks never rust and never need to be taken offline for painting.

In addition, the internal diffusers of DN Tank’s TES systems are made of high strength, non-corrosive PVC pipe, with all stainless steel supports and no moving parts. And all DN Tanks conform to AWWA Standard D110.

As a result these engineered features — and DN’s tank-building experience since 1929 — DN Thermal Energy Storage systems require no structural maintenance during the service life of the tank.

Siting – DN TES tank exteriors are constructed from non-corrosive prestressed concrete covered by shotcrete. So tank installation can be above grade, partially buried, or totally underground.

Sizing – DN Thermal Energy Storage Tanks are designed and built to your exact cooling requirements: from 50,000 gallons to 105,000,000 gallons.

Maximum Energy Efficiency – In practice, DN TES tanks have produced 93% efficiency and higher. No other stratified chilled water thermal energy storage tanks are capable of greater thermal efficiency.
